The Unique Benefits of LANAP

LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a minimally invasive alternative to conventional flap surgery for moderate-to-severe gum disease. The laser targets diseased tissue and bacteria in each periodontal pocket while leaving healthy tissue intact, prompting the gum to reattach and the bone to regenerate over the months that follow. Compared with traditional surgery, LANAP offers four advantages that matter day to day.

How LANAP Treats Periodontal Disease

Every LANAP case at our McLean office follows the same protocol so the laser does exactly what it is designed to do.

1

Consultation

Dr. Han reviews your dental history, examines your gums, measures pocket depths, and confirms whether LANAP is the right treatment for your case.

2

Laser Disinfection

The PerioLase fiber is gently inserted into each periodontal pocket. The laser selectively removes diseased tissue and eliminates the bacteria driving the infection.

3

Tartar Removal

Dr. Han uses scaling instruments to remove the hard tartar deposits below the gum line. Clearing the surface allows new attachment to form.

4

Gum Reattachment

A second laser pass seals the tissue and prompts a stable blood clot. The clot is the foundation for the gum to reattach to the cleaned root surface.

5

At-Home Care

Dr. Han sends every patient home with detailed aftercare instructions. Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and coming in for regular cleanings at our office protect your results.

LANAP Cost, Insurance, and Financing

LANAP pricing depends on the extent of the gum disease and the number of teeth involved. Dr. Han walks every patient through a complete estimate during the consultation, before any treatment is scheduled.

We accept all types of PPO dental insurance and file claims on your behalf. We work with CareCredit® to manage any out-of-pocket costs, so payments can be spread over a manageable timeline. We also offer in-house financing for qualified patients: put 50% down, and we'll finance the remaining balance interest-free.

LAPIP for Failing Dental Implants

When a dental implant develops peri-implantitis (the implant-equivalent of gum disease), the surrounding bone can erode until the implant fails outright. LAPIP® (Laser-Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure) uses the same PerioLase MVP-7 system to treat the infection without removing the implant.

The protocol mirrors LANAP. The laser disinfects the implant surface and the surrounding pocket, scaling clears bacterial buildup, and a controlled tissue response gives the bone a chance to regenerate around the implant. For many patients, LAPIP is the difference between saving the implant and starting the restoration over.

General dentists in Northern Virginia regularly refer implant-complication cases to our office because most practices that offer laser gum treatment do not perform LAPIP. If you have an implant that is sore, loose, or showing gum recession around it, Dr. Han can determine the best way to protect your smile.

Common Questions About LANAP

Is LANAP painful?

Most patients report significantly less discomfort than they expected, and considerably less than conventional flap surgery. The laser does not require scalpel incisions or sutures, so the soreness during recovery is mild for most cases.

How long does LANAP recovery take?

Most patients return to their normal routine within about 24 hours. Soft foods for the first day or two and a gentle approach to brushing the treatment area are usually all the recovery requires.

Does insurance cover LANAP?

Many PPO dental insurance plans cover at least part of LANAP because the procedure is considered medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan. Our team files claims on your behalf and walks you through the out-of-pocket portion at the consultation.

Can LANAP save a tooth my dentist recommended extracting?

In many cases, yes. LANAP can treat teeth that conventional surgery would consider too compromised, because the laser targets the infection and stimulates regeneration without cutting away supporting tissue. Dr. Han evaluates pocket depths, bone levels, and the overall prognosis during the consultation to determine whether LANAP can preserve the tooth.

How is LANAP different from regular laser dentistry?

Many dental practices use generic diode lasers that can clean diseased tissue but cannot stimulate the regeneration that defines a successful periodontal outcome. LANAP is a specific protocol performed only with the PerioLase MVP-7, the only laser the FDA has cleared for that purpose.
